Posting for March 6, 2006
I am so impressed with your postings and responding to each other that I don't want to get us off track but...it seems like everyone is struggling a bit with classroom management issues and for some of you, not being looked at as "the teacher". Let's talk about it and what you are doing to make the transition to "in charge". Remeber a comment and a response to another person's posting.

The class I have a problem with is my Psychology class. They love to talk! I think they realized today who the teacher was when they got their scores back from their first test. All of a sudden they realized I was not a joke. I am still having problems with the talking, especially during the block periods. I have tried talking to them individually and holding them after class, but some of them continue to gab. What is working for everyone else?

Andrew- while hitting the kids with a stick sounds appealing at times, I think I will try some other methods first. I know as soon as I write this it will go the opposite today but her we go. My Psychology class is doing better about the noise level. I took their lunch time away and that kind of worked, but I do not want to do that all the time. Instead, I have just started talking softer and when the kids realized that I was no longer going to shout over them, they started to get quiet. It really helped when they asked what I had said and I responded, "What?! You mean you can't hear me over your talking?!" After that they have been doing better.
I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who has problems with chatty kids. I wonder how much of it is related to the fact that these are not our classrooms. While the kids respect us, I think they still look to our metor teachers. All this tells me is that I want my own classroom REALLY BAD!!
