TPA Tasks 1 and 2
This week I'd like you to talk about your progress on the TPA. Task 1 sets the foundation for the rest of the tasks. What is the focus of the learning segment? Have you run into any challenges with Task 1? Do you have any tips for filming and Task 2? Conclude with a brief overview of your week. Respond to each other. :)

The focus of my TPA Lessons is on Geometry. My students, being second graders, have little to no prior knowledge of shapes and so I will start from the beginning and my last lesson will be on shape movement. My biggest challenge with Task 1 is finding research to support my learning styles and teaching. I feel that it should be fairly easy but it has become a bit of a struggle for me to find what I am looking for. Other than that my problem is jumping around from question to question and so when I read back over it it doesn't all make sense. I will finish filming my lessons on Monday and my only tip would be to record as much as you can so you have plenty to choose from. My week was long and tiring. I was exhausted from the long weekend but I am enjoying taking the weekend off of traveling and getting work done in Bamberg. The kids were especially rowdy this week but we were able to celebrate my half birthday, I was surprised with cake and ice cream! They are so sweet. I am hoping to head to Vienna with all of you next weekend and I couldn't be more excited!
So far I feel I have made quite a bit of progress on the TPA, however it is all still a little overwhelming. The focus of my learning segment is on comprehension and strategies for comprehending texts. It is focused on the genre of fairytales and all three lessons relate to the three different versions of The Three Little Pigs. I videotaped my lessons a week ago and I feel I have quite a lot of good footage. It is overwhelming trying to go through four hours worth of footage to just pick out 15 minutes. A tip I would say when filming is to make sure you can hear the students because they are usually a lot quieter and it is important to hear what they are saying!
My week went very well. It was a short week, but very busy as I have been making all the plans for March. The developmental learning centers change each month and since I am fully in charge I was responsible for changing them. I also made their homework chart for the month and the lesson plans. We also had math night on Thursday, which Haley and I volunteered at. It was a lot of fun! This weekend we stayed in Bamberg to get some work done and just take it easy. Haley and I checked out the big pool called here which is called ‘Bambados’. They had water slides that were so much fun!!! We did forget to bring towels though which was kind of a bummer ☺ Have a fun and successful week everyone!
The focus of Task 1 in my first grade classroom is creating numbers. It starts off by working on face power--making sure students can add two single digit numbers together quickly. It then moves to number scrolls which has kids writing numbers on hundreds grid sheets and then we move in to place value. The beginning of the learning segment builds up to the end which is place value. It is something that the students have seen a few times briefly but this is really the first time we are having an indepth conversation about it.
One thing I have found difficult with our math program in correlation with the TPA is that it spirals. This makes for a little extra work explaining why the acvitity that the children do after the learning segment is exactly the same as what was just taught to them. However, I feel as though the children are cathing on to new concepts very quickly since they have already been introduced to them.
Even though it was a four day week it seemed rather long. It was hectic, however, I think that may be the case every week. I'm getting use to that finally! Carol and I stayed later one day after school to plan out the next few weeks. We havent gotten all of the work together yet but its in the lesson plan. It felt like a great accomplishment and allows for less stress during the week!
Those are great recommendations Haley and Sophia! I've filmed two days so far and it is actually rather comical to watch what students are doing when you cant see them and hear the things that they say.
I was looking at the instructions and it says that you can include a 3 minute segment about the learning targets and talking about them with the students. The second day I filmed put them up on the board and we checked back in personnally and as a class to make sure we were on track for learning and reaching the learning targets.
Thanks ladies for your posts...where are the guys??
It sounds like you are making good progress with the TPA. Let's plan some time just to talk about the TPA when I am there. I've found if you look at each other's work and talk about it each of you benefits. I know these are busy times with you taking on more teaching responsibilities and working on the TPA. Keep up the good work!
