Preparing for the PPA

Hello Ladies,
Chris will be heading over for her visit in just over a week. Here is what we would like to see you reflecting on for this week's blog prompt.

This week I would like you to look over the PPA and talk about the PPA lessons you are planning to teach while I am there. Also, how do you plan to address the PISL assignment?

This would be a good time to post questions so that I can give you input as you work on your plans.

For the positive impact assignment, I will use the unit that I began this week. I have titled it "Spy Skills". It is about data transmission, coding, and cryptography. I began the unit with a KWL chart. I will use that as my pre-assessments. I have 3 quizzes through out the unit that I will also use as work samples. I also have a presentation toward the end of the unit, that I will use. Lastly, I will use the test and KWL chart as the final work samples for the assignment.

In regards to your visit and the PPA, I am still trying to make some decisions about my lessons. For my PPA lesson, do I need to use Washington standards? Washington doesn't have any standards that would work for Discrete Math. I could use an Algebra lesson if I need to use Washington standards.

Another problem is that we have Terra Nova testing when you are here, so some classes are cancelled. I know that you will want to see a full day in Julie's class and mine and then split the extra day. Unfortunately, when you spend a full day with me the maximum that you would be able to see me teach is one lesson (if you come on Tuesday it would be one lesson in two different periods).

Julie and I still need to sit down and talk out a schedule. So I have three possible lessons for the PPA depending on when you are in my class and whether I need to include Washington standards. The lessons are Soundex method and personal data encoding, error detection and correction, and simplifying complex fractions.

Chris and Heidi,

I am so sorry about posting so late, I have been extremely busy and I spaced the blog post. I know I should be used to weekly blog post by now, but it just seems to be one of those weeks.

For my PPA lesson, I will be teaching a lesson on classifying animals. This is the first lesson of science that will have been taught since I’ve been here. We are planning on getting ladybugs, ants, and butterflies in the following week, so this lesson will kick off the beginning of science. I will use a KWL chart to learn about what the students know about animas.

Since this is a new area of learning and the students haven’t been doing any science, I thought it would be a good unit to use for my positive impact assignment. The KWL chart will be used as a pre-assessment and I will be collecting student work samples to show learning and formative assessment. Worksheets, journals, and other projects will be used to assess student understanding.

I hope this enough information and I look forward to seeing you! Travel safe.
