Week in Review 2/8-2/12

Hi Beth and Julie,
Just a reminder to post about how this week went and let us know of anything fun in your classrooms.

I just got a small box together today and dropped it into the mail to you both. It will come to Dolly and we've asked that she give it to you. There is a "flip video" recorder in there as well as a few "goodies from home". Chris will talk to you more about the use of the flip video in your classroom, but feel free to use it in your travels as well!

Happy Valentines Day from Pullman!

This last week went well. We are working on fair division in the discrete math classes. The students really seem to enjoy it because it is easy for them to see how they could apply the skills they are learning. Additionally, we are doing a lot of discovery learning because it works well with the content, the students seem to enjoy it, and the students seem to grasp the information. The most challenging part is to find a way to help students retain the information. About half of the students won't do their homework on any given night, and since we are on the block schedule, we can't spend two days on most lessons, so they don't get the information repeated on different days as much. I have really tried to not become a nag about always doing their homework. Instead, I ask them what is their semester goal. I think that even just reminding them that they have a goal for the class will help, and has started helping. Students have already improved in their metacognitive skills and are beginning to develop better note taking habits.

This is something little, but it was fun and it brightened my day. On Friday, one of my students walked in at the end of the day to give me a Valentine she had made in Spanish class. I thought that was really nice of her, and it is nice to know that the students feel like they are building relationships with me.

The weeks feel like they have been flying by. It has been very interesting to learn about how DODs schools function. Since there are two elementary schools in the area and Mark Twain is the smaller of the two, there have been some major cut backs. It appears that the school may be closing in a couple of years. Many specialists have been transferred to different areas. This processes is very complicated and affects many peoples’ lives that don’t have a choice about the decision.

Other than this, school has been wonderful. This past week I taught subtraction with regrouping, which was a very challenging lesson to teach. Most of the students grasped the concept and I was able to see how effective manipulatives can be in this type of lesson. The students seem to enjoy the lesson and were very cooperative. It felt like a big success compared to my other math lesson that was a struggle to teach.

This week we also celebrated Valentines Day, and Chinese New Years. It was great to see what classrooms look like on exciting days such as these. Monday was also presidents day, which was not as fun, but still important. Friday is the hundredths day of school as well. It has been very busy lately, but at the same time a lot of fun!
