Week of April 13 Posting

Please post your goals for the next three weeks and how you hope to meet them. Also, share with us what you did during spring break and one thing you will remember (Lauren, even if you stayed home!). Don’t forget to respond to each other too.

Postings need to be done by April 21.

My spring break was not too exciting. We did not go anywhere, my husband still had to work. We did have a little more time to relax, go for walks on the beach, and have churros and chocolate for breakfast. After spending so much time with my kids, I started to remember how much work it is to stay home all day with two toddlers. I did have my nanny come three hours a day during the week so that I could go to school and work on my lesson plans. I wanted to make my last three weeks a little less stressful and more enjoyable by getting ahead.

My goals for the next two weeks are simple. I would like to finish strong and keep improving upon my teaching skills. At the same time I would also like to have a little more free time in my schedule to devote to completing my WSU paperwork.

I can’t believe I am saying this, but there is a part of me that is hesitant to give back my classes to my mentor teacher! There is also a part of me that is excited to have a reduced workload and more time for my family! So I feel torn. I have already given back one class, AP Biology last week, and it felt weird. It looks like I will have my other 3 classes more or less to the very end, which is good for practice and the separation anxiety that I am developing. I’m not sure how much observation time I should try to schedule. My mentor teacher seems to think I might get bored with too much observation and should keep teaching. I’m kind of curious how other classmates are dealing with phasing out of student teaching.

From Katie:
Over the course of the next 3 weeks I will be doing some DRA testing on my students. While the accreditation board is here at the school that is what I will be doing for part of the mornings. I hope to work more on my classroom management. We got a new student on Monday so I will be working one on one with him in order to catch him up on some of the projects that the class has been doing. Tomorrow my class is working with another 3rd grade class (my opportunity to work with another teacher) to create a president wax museum where each child represents a president. They have found costumes, made posters, and memorized a speech. My class has learned a song called Presidents Rap, which they are doing great at. They are very excited for tomorrow, as am I. Parents from my class decorated our hallway and it looks amazing. I realize the important of making those connection with the parents, because they will always come back to help. This Friday the class is going to go eat lunch at the dining center on base with the soldiers; I’m looking forward to it. Next week, my last week, we have a bowling field trip on Thursday and Friday will be devoted to science experiments, it will be a great way to end the experience.

For spring break I spent the first 3 days in Athens. I saw the Acropolis on the first day, which has been a dream of mine since I first got into Greek mythology in the 6th grade. I met some fun people at the hostel I was staying at and we had fun traveling around town. I had prepared a list of places to see and was able to see everything, and more. For the remainder of the trip I was in Rome. A good friend from the states came and met me there. We had a great hotel that overlooked the entire town and the local vineyards. It was a beautiful city. I was able to see Vatican City and all of the other important sights. It was tough to come back. O and my plane from Rome to Munich was an hour late on Sunday so I missed my 10:00 train. The next train was not until 2 am! I spent my time hanging out at the deserted train station. Of course I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t end up getting onto base until 7 a.m. I ended up going to school and made it through the day but I did crash at 7 that night. It was quite an adventure!

My spring break was a blast. Me, another student teacher and my boyfriend took the train down to southern italy. Then we took a boat across to Greece. In Greece we explored Delphi, Athens, Corinth and Patras. Then we took the train back up to Venice and then home. It was a blast.
My goals for this last week and a half is to prepare my students for my departure, and to keep teaching strong. I would like to leave my students with as much as i could give them in the time that i have them. I also feel torn about giving the class back. I hope that my mentor teacher continues to teach a the rate i have been.
I am excited to see other classrooms next week. I will only be out of my classroom for a day. I am telling my kids it is a test run for when i actually leave. Other then that i will be teaching all the way until that Friday i leave. Right now i feel its more important for me to prep them for my leaving then for me to see other classrooms. Guess there will never be enough time.

Holy smokes Spring Break was really fun. Colin and I flew into Slazburg, Austria and then made our way up through many German cities including Munich, Nurnberg, Rotenburg, and Mainz/Oppenheim. We had a blast, drank a lot of great beer, ate incredible bavarian food, and took about 600 pictures!! My favorite memory was probably walking around the wall of the walled-city, ROtenburg. The clearance of the ceiling was about 6 feet 3 inches and every once in a while I would take my gaze off of the incredible views to look back at Colin and watch him struggle to not hit hit 6 feet 7 inch head on the ceiling. Many great memories.

Colin and I had momentarily forgotten about this blog, and for that we are sorry. This week has been intense here at Lakenheath Middle School because the school is going through accreditation (I hear it is even more fun at the college level, right Chris and Heidi?!). Staff members have been freaking out all week, but I think it is a great expereince for student teachers.

Tonight I plan my last lesson. I will teach it tomorrow and Friday and then I turn the class back over to my cooperating teacher. I will breathe a huge sigh of relief and yet miss the students that I have bonded with. I feel like they are mine and not my cooperating teachers. It will be odd to not constantly be thinking "what am I going to teach next week?" as I travel throughout Europe, but I will appreciate the care free month and a half!

Just to keep you all updated I will head to Barcelona for 2.5 weeks until I meet my brother in London, where we will begin the real hopping around. First we will visit his friend in the peace corps in Romania! Next we head to Rome and will go north through the Cinque Terre and Tuscany region of Italy. We will Probably head over to Sardinia and then back to Barcelona for a few days before we fly back on June 22nd. I am sure by then I will be ready to be with family and friends.

Hope all is well with everyone. Have a great last couple of weeks!

Hal
