Week in Review 10/5-10/9, Due 10/13
Hello Ladies,
Here is your third Week in Review posting thru the blog.
Entries should be posted no later than the following Tuesday for the previous week. Remember, it doesn't have to be long and involved just a snap shot and what you are learning.
Chris will be arriving next week, so I'll be anxious to hear how you are planning for her visit and observation, and obviously how it all goes!

Well this last week went well! I have taken over the whole class for the most part. Delome helps out here adn there when I need her it is a great situation.
Last week Delome did two days of complete observation and in those two days I taught two full PPA lessons. The two lessons went hand in hand. One was a social studies lesson talking about timelines and chronology and the other one was a writing lesson emphasizing the writing process. To start with I had the students brainstorms events in their lives and write them down. Then I had them put their events in order and we have been creating drafts of the writing. The end product will be a zig zag book about the events of their lives put into chronological order.
I feel like both of the lessons went really well, all though I feel that my Social Studies introduction lesson was stronger. I feel that was because we did an example from a both and the kids got hands on interaction with the process.
I am enjoying teaching! As for preparing for Chris's visit I have been working on a lesson about the four season. I have been going to the library and collecting a bunch of good resources. In this lesson I want there to be whole group interaction as well as group/individual interaction. This lesson has been evolving in to a thematic study. I am thinking that we will be exploring seasons in reading, writing, and science. My PPA lesson however is going to be for science.
I am nervous for the visit and excited! We were just discussing the schedule and decided that the best way to do it, is have Chris go into Cherise's class on Monday for the whole day and Wednesday spend the whole day in my classroom. As for Tuesday we feel that it is going to be a crazy day because both of us have our hour spanish that day on top of our afternoon 25 minuet specialist. Also on Tuesday there is a bomb threat drill which will take up time. We have yet to experience one of these drills so we are not sure how long they take. We also feel that Tuesday might be a good day to have our meetings with her and also for her to talk to the Principals.
Once again I am very excited to have someone from back home be coming to visit! We look forward to seeing you this weekend!
Last week went really well. I've been doing more and more each day and there was day one week when once the day was done I realized I taught for the entire day. Many times Sandy and I end up team teaching and each jumping in when needed. It's been great, I really feel supported and like when I forget a quick preparation step she's there to help me make that transition run as smooth possible.
In preparation for next week I've been thinking of my lessons from the big picture and how I would like them to fit together. I would like them to integrate various subjects and build off of each other, so as of this moment I've been working on the outlines. This has included working with the librarians at the school to find resources about quilts that I can use to integrate social studies and math. At this point I plan on my PPA lesson being in social studies with a math integration and I'm also considering doing one in science. In science the students have been learning about rocks and next week they will begin to look for how rocks are used. I'm feeling about my outline and the overall goals and connections to the standards, and am now working on the specifics. It's interesting because I feel that even when I plan weeks ahead, the plan changes based on where the kids are at and how much we are able to get through that day or week!
I've also been having the students do a lot of hands on learning and trying to help them to work together. I think this will come into play when we work together as a class to make a class quilt and when they work in partners to make number quilts for math. They have also been exploring how numbers are made up of parts and I think the number quilts will help them to visualize this even more and for them to make more connections to patterns.
I'm excited and anxious for Chris to visit. I'm excited to see someone from back home and anxious because I feel this is a big step in my student teaching. I know the time will go well as I've been interacting with the students and teaching on a continuous basis, but there's still the added factor of being observed. (Although the class tends to be really good and they hardly to seem to notice when another adult is in the room.) As for the schedule Kyla and I think that it would be best for Chris to observe me on Monday and Kyla on Wednesday, with Tuesday being split between the two of us and meetings with the principa. Tuesday will be an interesting day because we both have our hour long Spanish period in the morning alond with our half hour special in the afternoon and a bomb drill. We haven't had a bomb drill yet, so neither of us know what to expect or how long for that to take. There are some unknowns that I'm a little nervous about, but I know the routine and the kids so I know it will all go well.
I'm excited for Chris to be here and to take this step. I look forward to seeing someone from home!
