It was great having Chris here last week, a little touch of home. It was also very beneficial to my teaching experience over here. It really allowed me time to fully reflect on my teaching and see that I am meeting the requirement s in my everyday teaching. I was really nervous for the observation, but when it came down to it there was no time to be nervous once I started teaching. A teachers day is full of different activities and meeting all of the students different needs. Before this I never realized how much goes into meeting all of the kids needs, and how natural it is for me. There was no time to think about my feelings and stress there was only time to focus on the kids, guiding them to do their best.
I am excited that Delome and I have the opportunity to do the pilot program of co teaching. So far things with that are great, I feel great about the situation and there is already a big difference with how much my mentor teacher is involved. Having the observation really allowed me time to completely reflect on my teaching style and see what is working and it has allowed me time to figure out how to strengthen my weakness. One things that I have been working on that seems to be working is using more wait time with the students, weather it is waiting for them to collect themselves to listen or to answer questions.
I am looking forward to the next two months to really focus on my weakness and to grow as an educator! I look forward to having my own classroom in the near future!
It was great seeing you Chris. I would love to come and talk with students who are interested in doing their experience abroad and those who are planning on doing it.
I really enjoyed having Chris here last week. I think it gave me the motivation and inspiration to really reflect on how I'm doing as a teacher. I thought I would feel more nervous while Chris was observing, but after about 5 minutes I just felt like she was Sandy or a parent volunteer. I think this is because the kids demand the attention and the energy, which is why I'm here at school, to help them learn. It was also great because while Sandy and I talk a lot about how the day is going or went it brought a formal aspect to the experience. I think it's this more formal feeling that has helped me to reflect more on my teaching and how things are working for the kids.
Since Chris has come and gone, I've been focusing on my classroom management and the follow through of the warnings. It can be hard and I don't like to do it, but it's actually less exhausting than dealing with the issue consistently. Some days do better than others in this regard and I'm just happy that Sandy is here to help remind me. I have also been trying to be more in contact with the parents. I'm sending a letter out tomorrow about what we're working on in math and then on Friday about what we've done in science and where we're going. Reflecting on parent communiciation has helped me to realize that even though I might ask the kids to tell their parents what they are doing at school, parents might not get the full message.
The class quilt is coming along and the kids have been redirected. I've conferenced with almost all of them about what makes them unique and special and how they are showing that. Most of them have got it and it's been fun to see their light bulb moments when they realize something that makes them unique.
Chris' visit gave me a lot of food for thought and I think it energized me again to keep looking for ways that I can improve. It was great to see Chris and I would love to come and talk to current students about doing student teaching overseas. It's been an amazing experience so far!
Hi Ladies,
I've been home a little over a week and am sorry I haven't corresponded. I want you both to know that I was very impressed with your classrooms and your part in it! You are learning and growing and I am very proud of you. Your reflections do just that..reflect on what you are learing about yourselves as educators. It was a pleasure to observe you in action and spend some time together in and out of school. Keep those journal entries coming since that is what makes you look at the week in review!
Kyla, I will be sending a note to Delome with more info regarding Co-teaching. I'm glad it is helping with her involvement. I am going to stress that the key is PLANNING between the two of you.
Cherise, I'm glad you are focusing on consistency with classroom management. That fits right into what you are writing about this week.
Thank you both for a wonderful visit. I am proud of you!
